Yixing clay is a type of clay from the region in Jiangsu Province in China, used in the art of pottery since the Song Dynasty (960–1279). Those were the times Yixing clay was first mined around Lake Tai, China. From the 17th century on, Europeans began to export Yxingware to Europe.
Commonly red or brown in colour, yixingware is also known as zisha ware. Typically left unglazed, they are very cohesive and can be formed by slabbing and throwing.
