The founder of Karakum Home grew up in the heart of the Silk Road Crossroads,

in the Eastern borders of Turkmenistan. Much of the architectural heritage has sadly been lost from this region so defined by desert, mountains, and precious oases. But old traditions remain, as do ancient trading hubs that can be traced back to the era when the Silk Road was thriving with caravans and merchants.

Life in this sun-baked setting is a gift granted by rivers such as the Amu-Darya. However, in the 1930s, man-made canals were created to siphon water from the Amu-Darya and the Uzbekistani Amal Sea from which it flows. While this prized resource was used to foster new life elsewhere, the result of such intervention was one of lasting ecological damage. This history offers us unique hindsight and the opportunity to learn essential lessons about the importance of sustainability.

As we build our brand, we draw not only from this wisdom but also the enduring history of the sprawling market at Merv, one of the Silk Road's most perfectly preserved oasis cities, which continues in plenitude to this day.
