Our Story
Every home has a story. Ours begins beside the Amu Darya River.
Long before Karakum Home existed, my family lived on the banks of the Amu Darya River, where the fertile waters met the vast Karakum Desert.
Our kitchens were places of gathering. Bread was never simply bread. Tea was never hurried. Recipes travelled from one generation to the next long before they were ever written down.
Growing up in Turkmenabat, I learned that the objects we use every day—a wooden mixing bowl, a ceramic jug, an enamel teapot—often become part of our family stories.
Karakum Home was born from that belief.
Today, alongside carefully chosen kitchenware, I share recipes, traditions and stories inspired by both the English country kitchen I now call home and the rich culinary heritage of Central Asia.
Welcome to our table.
At first glance, Karakum may seem an unusual name for a homeware company.
To me, it feels like home.
Karakum, meaning "Black Sand", is the great desert that stretches across much of Turkmenistan, where I was born and raised. At first, a desert may seem like an unlikely place to draw inspiration from. Yet, like so many landscapes, its true character reveals itself only when you look more closely.
The Karakum is a land of remarkable contrasts. Ancient caravan routes once crossed its sands as merchants travelled along the Silk Road carrying tea, spices, silk, ceramics and stories between East and West. Villages flourished wherever the mighty Amu Darya River brought life to the desert, creating places where hospitality was not simply a courtesy—it was a way of life.
In our part of the world, a guest is never greeted with an empty table.
Fresh bread is broken by hand.
Tea is poured before conversation begins.
Meals are prepared with patience, shared generously and remembered long after the plates have been cleared.
Those traditions have stayed with me wherever I have lived.
Today, Karakum Home brings together two worlds that have shaped my life: the rich culinary heritage of Central Asia and the quiet comfort of the English country kitchen. Every ceramic jug, enamel teapot, wooden bowl and carefully chosen recipe reflects my belief that the kitchen is more than a place to cook—it is where families gather, friendships are strengthened and memories are made.
You may also notice a small gecko in our logo.
Geckos are among the resilient creatures that call the Karakum Desert home. Quiet, adaptable and enduring, they have survived in one of the world's most demanding landscapes for generations. For us, the gecko is a gentle reminder that true beauty often lies in resilience, craftsmanship and the stories we carry with us.
Karakum Home is not simply named after a place.
It is named after a way of welcoming people.
A way of cooking.
A way of gathering.
A way of sharing.
