What Is the Karakum Desert?
The Karakum Desert stretches across much of modern-day Turkmenistan and is one of the largest deserts in Central Asia. Its name comes from the Turkic words kara (black) and kum (sand), often translated as "Black Sand Desert."
Despite its reputation as a harsh and arid landscape, the Karakum is full of life. Ancient caravan routes once crossed its sands as merchants travelled along the Silk Road carrying silk, spices, ceramics, tea, textiles and ideas between East and West.
Today, the desert remains home to an extraordinary variety of wildlife that has adapted to survive its hot days and cool nights.
Meet the Desert Gecko
Among the Karakum's most fascinating inhabitants are its geckos.
Several species live throughout the desert, including the Turkmen Gecko (Mediodactylus turcmenicus), a small nocturnal reptile perfectly adapted to life in one of the world's most challenging environments.
